I don't know the exact context of this argument, but on the matter of "the Old Testament not applying", what is probably meant is that the Mosaic Law is no longer abided by within Christian practice, as Christ delivered us a New Covenant that lacked such restrictions as, say, the forbidding of pork consumption or the mandate of circumcision. I would recommend reading chapter five of Saint Paul's Epistle to the Galatians for additional clarity.
