t. played since 1.4.7 and currently plays on a 5 year old world that went from 1.16 to 1.21.4
Modern minecraft offers so much, there is always something to do. I can't fathom the idea of playing the beta or even something like release 1.7 for 5 years
 
modern minecraft and old minecraft have two different audiences they want to appeal to

modern: autists who want to be given things to do

old: autists who want total creativity for what they choose to do

Exploration in minecraft is annoying until you get elytra and then trivial once you get it, there isn't a good middle ground because you often need to travel 10k+ blocks for simple things like cactus.
 
When the first alphas were going up it was crazy how much people liked the game. There was nothing really like it, especially something free to play. I used to run a personal server for a few friends and it was a great time for a few years, but theres just so much shit to do now that I'm checking the wiki more than playing the game.
Maybe we can host an alpha server on a smaller than usual map w/ Creative mode and let you guys play with it. It would be reset once per week so everyone would get a chance to grief or build.

I like elytra but mainly for its vertical traveling capabilities. I can't imagine building big redstone contraptions without it.

Also finding new structures is annoying, they are usually underground and you have to fuck around with the cartographer villager.

I actually tried hosting a beta server once with friends and it was really laggy and unplayable. Not sure why

It's probably the server host. If you were using your own computer or using a poor third party hosting service that's probably why.
I used bloom.host for a personal minecraft server with some friends of mine but 18 dollars a month is insane and eventually costs caught up to me and I couldn't afford it anymore geg

My VPS used to cost me $17 a month but I haggled it down to $3 for 12 months.
